Having helped springboard 24 of the program’s 26 student-athletes to collegiate hardball homes in its inaugural season, Scotland Campus Baseball continues to build a national brand.
The fast-growing high school and post graduate baseball program, which featured some of the nation’s top-shelf talents during the 2019 campaign, has added former MLB pitcher Josh Edgin to its staff. Edgin is now the head high school coach and the program’s recruiting coordinator.
Edgin, he of the illustrious career as a multi-sport athlete at nearby Mercersburg Academy, spent six seasons as a MLB pitcher. He’s most widely recognized for his relief role with the New York Mets in 2014. During that season, Edgin boasted a 1.32 ERA–despite playing through inflammation in his pitching elbow.
“Coach Edgin knows the ropes of the highest level of baseball and has a real heart for helping these kids who are in pursuit of their dreams daily, it is really a passion of his,” said Scotland Campus Prep coach Todd Weldon, who has been instrumental in recruiting and nurturing myriad college players.
Weldon, who coached at Wayland Baptist University (TX), the school at which the former pitcher cemented his legacy with single-season records in wins (11) and strikeouts (120), also spent time with the New York Mets Organization as a player.
“Given his professional career and his experience playing in the big leagues, Coach Edgin is able to instill valuable lessons and operate a first class program that really prepares kids for the rigors of the next level,” Weldon said.
“Since his retirement from the Washington Nationals, it has been clear that Josh has fully committed himself to helping broaden opportunities and scholarship opportunities for young players. He’s giving back to an area in which he thrived as a player himself. We are extremely fortunate to have him here at Scotland. He will always hold our kids to a high standard on the field, in the classroom, and in life.”
Edgin’s agent, Brian McGinn, serves as the Athletic Director at the sprawling campus.
McGinn, of locally based McGinn Sports Agency currently represents Franklin County area professionals such as Travis Ott (Tampa Bay Rays) and Brady Feigl (Texas Rangers).
McGinn also represented Waynesboro product Nathan Minninch, the man-child first baseman who at one point played in the Boston Red Sox organization.
The program featured a highly-touted outfielder in Bernard Shivers, a freakish athletic talent with blur-like speed.
Shivers hit a scalding .400 for the Knights this past season and pulled off several dazzling catches which only rarified athletes are capable of.
Shivers, who had pre-draft workouts with the Baltimore Orioles and several other teams, is headed into his freshman season at Howard College, a JUCO national power. He’s got the skill-set and the MLB-ready defense to emerge into a considerable 2020 MLB draft prospect.
It was McGinn who reached out to his former client and close friend Edgin, presenting him with the opportunity to coach high level prep school ball.
