At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Delaware First State Academy’s Gregory Binns has all the tools to emerge into a late bloomer in this year’s hot house, prep basketball climate.
Prep School has become a viable option, especially when you consider the uncertainty surrounding the NCAA during these turbulent times of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Binns is an adept, high IQ scorer who can also really impact a game on defense.
Given the pesky defender and Class of 2021 product’s stout on-ball pressure and knack for instigating turnovers and swiftly converting them to transition buckets, FSA head coach Darryl Schofield envisions Binns as the spirit of the team’s lockdown operation. A high energy guy, Binns sets a loud tone that his teammates tend to eat off.
“He’s a defensive stopper and a transition type of player,” said Schofield of Binns.
“He shoots it really well from mid range and from outside with the three. Defense and getting out in transition, that’s really his forte. He can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. He’s got a motor and he plays hard at all times. I like to say he’s a ‘poor man’s Dwayne Wade.”
Cognizant that this gap year could bolster his late blooming stock, Binns is understanding of the role his head coach envisions for him.
“With the finishing, shooting, and scoring, Coach Schofield knows I can do that,” explained Binns.
“He knows the ball is going to go in the basket. Really, he wants me to be the leadership guy and locker room guy, who gets everyone involved. Scoring comes naturally to me, as coach Scho knows what I can do.”
Currently an under the radar caliber player, Schofield projects Binns to be an Atlantic 10 level player when all is said done.
First State Academy has boasted a high powered offense in its 3-0 start, scoring 100+ points in all three of of those victories.
Employing a breakneck attack that emphasizes the running game and pressure all across the court, the high wired Binns’ style tailor cut for Schofield’s system.
