Class of 2021 Drew Williams, a 6-foot-7 3-point gunner at Scotland Campus (PA), has recently whittled down his collegiate choices to the final six of Murray State, East Carolina, Iowa State, South Carolina, Howard, and Tennessee State.
The versatile scorer is known to spread the floor out with his deft outside touch. As he’s proven throughout his prep career, Williams can spark game-altering runs with his ability to hit shots in succession.
You can’t pigeonhole him as a trigger man, either. A tactical and well built wing, Williams is an adept above the rim finisher who knows how to get into the driving lanes and score through contact.
“Drew is a veritable three level scorer and he’s still getting better in all components of his game,” explained Scotland assistant coach and Director of Player Development Sullivan Brown.
“He’s really been working on his intangibles. Becoming a better rebounder and also growing into a vocal leader. We also have several other unique pieces he is surrounded by this season.”
Williams is a product of BMaze Elite, the prestigious AAU program on which he spent refining his skill set.
Longtime head coach Chris Chaney and his connection to the prestigious BMAZE Elite AAU program has bolstered the program significantly.
Chaney actually coached program director Bobby Maze, the former Tennessee star, while at now defunct The Patterson School in North Carolina.
In registering a 40-4 overall record, winning the 2020 GAC championship, and garnering a berth in the 2020 Prep National Championship in Connecticut, Scotland was led by a pair of BMAZE products such as Tres Berry (Rhode Island) and Darlinstone Dubar (Iowa State).
The Knights have again tapped into the BMaze market, bringing in 6-foot-9 2022 prospect Brandon Huntley-Hatfield.
A transfer via IMG Academy (FL), Huntley-Hatfield is regarded as a top-7 recruit in 2022. Several high majors vying for the services of the big, mobile forward with a wide ranging offensive skill set.
With Iowa State’s longtime relationship with Chaney, with former AAU teammate Dubar being there, Iowa State has as good a shot as anyone.
The philosophies of head coach Steve Prohm and the way his offense caters to a player of Williams’ scoring skill set is also a plus factor.
At the same time, Frank Martin and South Carolina have been on Williams for a while now.
You can’t rule out Howard, which landed some prized recruits this past summer.
Having just landed five star recruit Makur Maker, the program aspires to garner the HBCU national visibility, following multiple incidents of racial injustice which raised worldwide awareness.
Scotland, which has been playing in a “Bubble” setting skin to the one used in the NBA, opens the season up Nov.3 against Experience Academy from Tennessee.
