With his college ready physicality, deft 3-point touch, and deep range that continues to grow, Class of 2022 left handed guard Sean Hutchinson II has the tools and immeasurable intangibles to ascend the rankings this season at Malvern Prep.
Hutchinson II has improved incrementally at carving his way to the rim, barreling his way through traffic, and manufacturing points at the free throw line. A knockdown man by trade, Malvern Prep’s Hutchinson II will be flushed into a prominent role as a high level shooter who can play both guard positions and create.
The Philadelphia native revamped his entire workload during Covid, self starting with innovative workouts and learning to ramp up with the unrequired work on his own. He’s added to his scoring arsenal with a barrage of stepbacks, pull ups, hesitations, isolations, and an ability to get into the nooks and crannies of defenses and finish through traffic and contact.
“Once everything broke out (with Covid) and I couldn’t get into the gym, I would go on runs outside to keep myself somewhat conditioned,” said the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Hutchinson II, who scored 15 points to go with six boards and four assists during an eye opening performance against Team Spartans on the AAU circuit.
“I would do different workout plans that I found on the internet and dribble outside. Then, I got in touch with my trainers who had access to the gym eventually.
Citing his “handle and making better playmaking decisions” as compartments in which his game has grown this summer and fall, Hutchinson II enters this season as more of a polished point guard. With him being left handed and his ability to dial in from downtown, Hutchinson II has the toolset to become a multi faceted threat in the backcourt.
“He’s a deadly shooter,” explained Schofield, who has groomed the likes of Dionte Christmas (Temple) and Stefon Jackson (UTEP) during his long career as a prep coach.
“He’s increased with his ability to see the floor and make plays. His handle has really come together. Now he’s able to put it on the floor and really leave the defender guessing.”
