Florida Combo Guard On Spring Grind

It’s been a bittersweet last few weeks of high school for Winter Springs 5-foot-7 Class of 2022 combination guard Rene Ahwal. While bidding adieu to high school athletics may elicit some sobering thoughts, she’s stoked that she will soon pursue a long time aspiration of playing college basketball.

“My sophomore year, I put it in my head that I really love the sport and it has brought a lot of joy to my life,” Ahwal explained.

“It motivated me because I know what type of player I want to become”

During a memorable senior campaign this year at Winter Springs, Ahwal was essentially an extension of her coach on the floor. She played with a gritty style and unbridled focus, turning in multiple games of four 3-pointers or more. Being more cognizant of her teammates and their tendencies, she was able to feed the post and trigger the uptempo attack with the ball in her hands. Part of her coming of age process was understanding the onus was on her to turn in big plays under heightened pressure, hitting that difficult shot amid draping close-outs and calmly sinking free throws.

A high academic prospect, Ahwal current boasts a 3.5 GPA at Winter Springs. Stoked with confidence and also buying into the grind, she continues to be consumed by the game. She’s currently plying her trade on the AAU circuit and also training at a consistent pace weekly.

A stout on ball defender with active hands throughout, Ahwal averaged a team-best four steals. This, along with her 12PPG and three assists allowed her to seize the leadership reins as a veritable elderstateswomen on a youth laden team.

Following her a memorable senior season, she’s currently weighing several options and could soon commit to a future hardwood home.
