2023 Zionsville QB Christian Abney Gaining Visibility

As an underrated passer with the type of blurrish speed that’s made him one of the state’s most intriguing dual threats, Class of 2023 Zionsville (Ind.) quarterback Christian Abney is starting to generate overdue buzz on the recruiting market.

Abney, who threw for 1000+ yards and 11 touchdowns to two interceptions as a junior, has intangibles with his work rate and ability to lead by example with unbridled focus.

Subscribing to a 12-month program and a high order commitment to adding muscle to a 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame, Abney is starting to attract Division 1 suitors. He was offered by Ball State at the beginning of the month and his progression during the spring season continues to draw more interest.

As a prolific red zone passer and boasting a passing rating of 104.1 (he hit receivers at a 70-for-126 clip this past year), Abney is flushed into a prominent role as an offensive engineer under Zionsville head coach Scott Turnquist.

He was able to utilize the burst and 4.56 40-yard time he displayed last season, scoring seven touchdowns via the run.Embodying toughness and grit have been instrumental factors for Abney, who bounced back from a broken collarbone to help propel Zionsville to a berth in the 5A state title game.

Ramping up with the unrequired work and developing a rapport with his teammates has accelerated the day to day growth for Abney.

Establishing tight bonds with this fleet of receivers and his teammates has helped build camaraderie in the off-season, as they have lofty in-house expectations for the upcoming season.

“We have a talented receiver core that is able to do anything we ask of them,” Abney said. “They are able to adjust to any game plan our coaches put in.”

Part of Abney’s evolution as a diamond in the rough caliber recruit has been flanking himself with top-tier competition. He’s been training consistently at X Factor Quarterback Academy, an around the clock training program under Anthony Morelli, the former Penn State quarterback.

He’s trained alongside guys such as Danny O’Neil the Class of 2024 All American quarterback at Cathedral HS.

“Training with Anthony has been great for me,” Abney said.

“The competition based training he coaches is the best thing for a player. He pushes us to go above and beyond and be our best while making sure our attention to detail is there. He emphasizes aspects like board work, foot work, and other things which could go unnoticed to most people.”
